The World Academy

The World Academy is an integrated enrichment program for youth ages 6 - 14 that consists of martial arts lessons, cultural arts education, fine arts, and computer classes for children in East Baltimore. The purpose of the program is to provide a structured environment for children to receive academic support, opportunity for creative expression, discipline, and encouragement.

The Academy consists of an after school and a summer component. During the school year, participants attend a variety of cultural arts classes including martial arts practices, group learning sessions focused on world culture, theatre lessons and computer-based learning sessions. A youth counselor provides overall program coordination and monitors the weekly program activities. Professional instructors provide the martial arts, cultural arts and computer training.

The Summer program lasts six weeks and focuses on different world cultures. The summer curriculum leads up to a trip outside of Maryland. Youth participants engage in physical recreation (dance, martial arts, games), educational exercises and field trips.

The Academy has been designed to engage and support parents in addition to providing youth with positive developmental opportunities.

Through close collaboration with HOU and the Housing Authority of Baltimore City, Hope Village staff refers parents to case management and job training opportunities. Hope Village also encourages parents to play a role in the program by acting as chaperones and volunteers.

In the past year, the 15 participants in the World Academy demonstrated, on average, almost a full letter grade improvement on their report cards from the beginning of the year to the end.
