Community Building

In an effort to provide advocacy and support to low-income families, Hope Village implants a variety of community building activities including the following:
  • The weekly Hope Village Radio Show
  • Six community events/holiday parties
  • Monthly food distribution to families in need
  • Christmas gift basket give-away to 60+ households
  • Individual advocacy for over 100 households on matters related to housing and family stability
  • Grant distribution for eviction prevention, domestic violence intervention, drug rehabilitation, and employment, educational and emergency assistance
  • Senior recreation days
  • The monthly Hope Village Newsletter
  • Representing public housing residents in negotiations and important meetings

Hope Village, Inc. operates in close cooperation with HOU, a case management provider, and refers individuals to a case manager if they require professional help. Hope Village has also established a community transportation program targeting the needs of seniors and disabled members of the community.

Accomplishments: In August of 2003 the move home for the residents of Broadway Homes into the new Broadway Overlook began. A return rate of over 65% of the displaced residents presented a relocation challenge. Through intense advocacy during the relocation project, Hope Village was able to assist eligible residents acquire earned rent rebates. The move was completed in 6 months.

In working closely with the residents during and since the move, Hope Village helped to provide jobs for work ready residents and in doing so helped the average income per household increase from approximately $4,500.00 per year to an annual income of near $15,000. This increase is especially significant considering 25% of the residents are on a fixed income. The increase of income raised the average rent contribution per household to $241.00, up from $85.00. One of our crowning achievements is ZERO evictions at Broadway Overlook.

Hope Village is also expanding its programs to other subsidized housing developments such as The Towne at the Terraces and Heritage Crossing in Baltimore City. Hope Village provides youth programs and case management services to the kids’ families in the subsidized housing developments. The combined youth services and case management components combined will provide a holistic service to assisted families.
